From minor misalignment to severely rotated teeth, braces are a tried-and-true teeth-straightening treatment that can address a number of orthodontic issues. Despite its popularity, however, many patients aren’t aware of its long history, unique technology, and diverse uses. Intrigued? Then keep reading to learn five fun facts about braces!

#1. Braces Are Almost 300 Years Old

That’s right! Braces were first created back in 1728 by a French physician named Pierre Fauchard. At the time, he used a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron, referred to as a “Bandeau,” to expand the palate. He even published a book called “The Surgeon Dentist,” where he documented his teeth-straightening methods.

#2. We Have NASA to Thank for Modern Braces

Here’s another fun fact: the nickel titanium in most braces wire was originally developed for NASA! Although it was originally intended to be used on space shuttles, its flexible wires and sturdy shape are ideal for addressing misaligned teeth and bite issues. Their scientists even created the transparent material used for invisible braces, polycrystalline alumina!

#3. Braces Are Used for More Than Straightening Teeth

Braces are widely known for their ability to guide crooked and gapped teeth into their properly aligned positions. However, braces can do more than that! To start, these orthodontic appliances can correct bite issues, like overbites and crossbites. Additionally, braces can benefit your overall health by decreasing your chances of developing dental problems and increasing your chewing efficiency.

#4. Every Orthodontist Is a Dentist Too!

Before completing a 2-3 year postgraduate program in orthodontics, orthodontists earn their DMD or DDS. So, although not every dentist is an orthodontist, every orthodontist is a dentist! Only about 6% of American dentists are orthodontists, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.

#5. Braces Aren’t Just for Kids

Since children and teens are two of the biggest age groups with braces, it’s not surprising that many adults assume they are “too old” for this teeth-straightening treatment. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, getting braces later in life comes with some benefits, like a better understanding of the importance of following your orthodontist’s instructions.

Now you know a bit more about the history and versatility of braces! If you’re interested in starting this treatment to transform your smile and improve your oral health, don’t wait to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist.
