Many people find flossing awkward or difficult, which is a large reason why only a third of the US population flosses as often as they should! Wearing braces can make this healthy habit especially challenging. However, it’s essential that you floss regularly during your orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth strong and healthy as they move into their ideal positions. Here are five easy tips for making flossing with braces easier and more effective!

Tip #1: Try Out Waxed Floss or Dental Tape

Waxed floss, as its name implies, is coated in a thin layer of biocompatible wax. Not only does this help it slide comfortably between teeth, but it’s less likely to get caught on your braces like regular floss. Similarly, dental tape is an ultra-thin ribbon of floss that is a great choice for those flossing around braces who have sensitive gums.

Tip #2: Use a Floss Threader

A floss threader makes it possible to floss underneath your wires, where plaque and bacteria are most likely to accumulate. This thin line of plastic has a loop at one end, where floss can be pulled through. Then, the other end can be threaded underneath the wires and pulled to the other side, bringing the floss with it! You’ll need to repeat this process for every tooth, but in the end, you’re far less likely to develop cavities or gum disease during your treatment.

Tip #3: Look Into Getting an Orthodontic Toothbrush

Not all toothbrushes are the same. In fact, some are made specifically to clean more efficiently around the wires and brackets of braces. There are full-sized toothbrushes that have slanted bristles that can reach between your orthodontics and teeth while you brush. Interdental brushes are smaller, and are designed to fit entirely between your wires and teeth.

Tip #4: Consider Investing in a Water Flosser

Parents, patients, and orthodontists alike say that water flossers are an excellent way to maintain great oral hygiene with braces. They use a thin, steady stream of water that can clean away plaque and bacteria hiding in places that are difficult to brush. What’s more, the cool splash of water can provide some much-needed relief if your teeth or gums are sore from braces.

Tip #5: Start Using Mouthwash

Do you use mouthwash regularly? If not, now is the perfect time to start! A quick rinse with mouthwash after brushing and flossing will pick up any loose debris that may have been left behind. When picking the product that’s right for you, make sure to choose one that has the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval. These products have been rigorously tested to ensure they meet the ADA’s standards for safety and efficiency. Some are even specifically designed to be used with orthodontics!

It’s completely normal to find flossing with braces to be challenging at first, but don’t give up! This healthy habit is essential for keeping your teeth strong, healthy and sparkling while they’re being straightened.
