4 Must-Know Tips for Easily Removing Your Invisalign Trays

If you’re on your orthodontic journey with Invisalign, you’re moving step-by-step toward a healthier, straighter smile! But as convenient as these clear aligners are, something you may struggle with is removing them—especially whenever you’ve just switched to a new set and they feel extra snug. However, learning how to properly remove them from your mouth will make your treatment infinitely easier and smoother. Here’s what you need to keep in mind.

Tip #1. Start from the Back

Begin by lifting the aligner off your back molars on one side first, and then do the same for the other side. Once both back corners are loose, slowly move toward the front teeth. This should make the front section much easier to remove. You can also stand in front of the bathroom mirror to give yourself a clearer view of your back teeth. Use this technique for both aligners.

Tip #2. Use an Aligner Removal Tool

If your aligners are really snug, or if you have attachments, you can use an Invisalign removal tool like an OrthoKey to make things easier. These small tools can safely hook under the aligner edge to make removal much faster and stress-free. You can also keep a backup removal tool in your purse, backpack, or car.

Tip #3. Always Be Gentle

You should always avoid using excessive force or sharp objects, like pens or utensils, to remove your aligners, since this can damage them—or your teeth and gums! Similarly, don’t force your aligners off from the front first, and don’t squeeze them as you work them off.

Tip #4. Rinse and Store

Once your aligners are out, whether you’re just having a quick snack or a long, three-course meal, be sure to rinse them with cool water before storing them in their protective case. Never place them on an open countertop or wrap them in a napkin, since they can easily become lost.

If your aligners give you trouble when you go to remove them, don’t panic! It also sometimes helps to take a short break and try again after a few minutes with the above tips. However, if you still cannot comfortably remove them, give your orthodontist a call for help.
